Without Mozart and Tesla, Austria's living list belongs to Schwarzenegger and the paddock
iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read
The Alive reading of the Austria origin list for August 2026 removes four dead names and lets Formula One's Helmut Marko and Gerhard Berger into the top fifteen.
The Alive reading of the Austria origin list strips out Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Nikola Tesla, Franz Joseph I and Hedy Lamarr, and the table that remains for August 2026 is a much more modern country. Arnold Schwarzenegger stays first at 24, and his lead over the living field grows to more than eleven points. Christoph Waltz, the multilingual actor, moves up to second at 12.9, and David Alaba, the Real Madrid defender who captains Austria, is third at 11.8.
Sixty of the 64 measured names are alive, so the list loses only four people, but those four were all in the top eight and their departure rearranges everything below. Toto Wolff, the Mercedes Formula One team principal, becomes fourth at 10.7, and further down two more motorsport figures appear who were hidden in the standard reading: Helmut Marko, the former racing driver who shaped Red Bull's driver programme, at twelfth with 6.7, and Gerhard Berger, the former Formula One driver, at fifteenth with 6.3. Austria's living fame has a strong paddock accent.
The rest of the top fifteen shows the same emigrant pattern as the full list, only clearer. Conchita Wurst, the Eurovision winner, is fifth. Michael Haneke, the German-born director, is seventh. Dominic Thiem, the retired tennis player, is eighth. The two politicians are the sitting president Alexander Van der Bellen at ninth and the former chancellor Sebastian Kurz at thirteenth.
Parov Stelar, the producer credited with founding electro swing, is fourteenth at 6.5. Peter Handke, the writer, is eleventh. Among the living, Austria's attention runs through Hollywood, Formula One and football before it reaches the concert hall that defined the country's older fame.
About this list
This list ranks people from Austria by their overall worldwide fame rather than local attention, as assessed for August 2026: the top 60 of 60 names, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the Alive reading: living people only. The standard reading ranks everyone, living or dead, on one scale, and is one click away.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Arnold Schwarzenegger come Christoph Waltz and David Alaba.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
About Austria
Austria is one of the countries and regions the journal ranks every month. Country lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared with its neighbours and against the world.
